A Crisis in Ghana: Key Statistics
Need vs. Access: Approximately 37,240 Ghanaians are estimated to require dialysis. However, only about 1,195 patients (7.8% of the need) currently receive treatment, leaving over 96% without access to proper medical treatment.
Regional Disparities: While 9 out of 16 regions have dialysis centers, 7 regions lack any, affecting about 18.5% of the population.
Dialysis Costs: The average cost per dialysis session is $53.90, with public centers charging $48.20 and private centers $56.70. Given the national minimum wage of approximately $55.70 per month, these costs are prohibitively expensive for most citizens.
Mortality Rates: A study from Kumasi found that 50% of patients could afford only 20 dialysis sessions, leading to a 32.4% mortality rate within the first 90 days of treatment.
